The Piazza delle Erbe is certainly the busiest place I have visiting in Verona thus far. The ancient square was used by the Romans a forum or a market square. It is great to see how the square still serves its original purpose since there is still a very lively market here in the square. Although, you would see stuff for tourists, there is a lot of stuff for locals as well. Having said that, I thought it was a little difficult for me to appreciate the Piazza delle Erbe because of the market. Most of the time, you would be right next to a stall which would obstruct your view of the buildings around the square. I blame this for not being able to fully appreciate the historical significance of the structures here.

Not everything would have been blocked by the market stalls. One of the tallest structures here the square is the Torre Lamberti which is attached to the Palazzo della Ragione. If that name sounds familiar that is because you are a regular reader and you would know that there is a similarly named building in nearby Padova. I don’t think this would be a unique name in Italy since there would be many ancient Roman cities here with that name. The Palazzo della Ragione was originally used as a city hall for ancient Verona. It was then later used as a courthouse, “Ragione” means “reason”, knowing what it means helps a lot to understanding what this place is. Like a lot of the structures here in Verona, it was built of a long period of time. The tower is a relatively recent addition to the old palace.
