Outside the Arena di Verona
Outside the Arena di Verona

I arrived at the city center of Verona through the old city gates and ended up at the Piazza Bra. The piazza sure was large but that wasn’t what caught my eye. My eyes were immediately drawn to the huge Roman amphitheater at the piazza. I would have easily known about the amphitheater had I looked Verona up in preparation for my visit but I would like to have a little bit of surprise and wonder during my visit. I decided to plan my trip on a very high level, such as go to this city then to that city but nothing in depth anymore. Not only is it a lot of work to do research but I find that I would lose the sense of wonder when visiting a new place that I almost know what to expect. I don’t want that anymore and I am so glad that I did it.

The Arena di Verona is no doubt the main attraction here at the Piazza Bra and although there are other structures here at the Piazza, I decided to put all those in lower priority in favor of the arena. The arena is one of the best preserved Roman amphitheaters. Incidentally, it is ranked as one of the largest ones still in existence, with the largest being the Colosseum in Rome. Unlike the other amphitheaters which now just exists for tourism, the Verona Arena still holds performances to this day. This allows the arena to continue entertaining people just as it did almost two thousand years ago.
