When visiting the city of Vicenza, once cannot help but know about Andrea Palladio. He was one of the foremost architects which made Vicenza what it is today. In fact, the UNESCO World Heritage listing of Vicenza is all made up of the works of Andrea Palladio. Surely, this person has to be very important. I was at the Piazza dei Signori in Vicenza, which is the main square of the old town. It is surrounded by several old buildings. But these were just any other old buildings. These were buildings which were designed by Andrea Palladio. While the Basilica Palladiana is arguably the most prominent one, there is another structure here which was also designed by the the great architect.

The Palazzo del Capitaniato is a building that sits directly across the Basilica Palladiana. However, the building isn’t as large as the former. Despite its name, the Palazzo del Capitaniato has a rather small footprint compared to its more prominent neighbor. However, there were some signature features that you can see in the Palazzo del Capitaniato. In particular, the loggio or covered gallery is also present here. I would argue that the loggia of the Palazzo del Capitaniato looks much better compared to the Basilica Palladiano. I guess since the footprint of the building isn’t that big, they might as well make the design more intricate. It shows in the design of the building. In fact, when I was comparing the two buildings, my eyes would inevitably be drawn towards the Palazzo del Capitaniato because it was so much more attractive. These days, the building it used by the town council.
