Torre Bissara at the Piazza dei Signori in Vicenza

The Piazza dei Signori is one of the most important landmarks in the city of Vicenza. It is one of the largest squares in the city and certainly it was the largest in the old city. The old city of Vicenza is preserved beautifully and the more modern one was built around it. Compared to the other piazzas I have seen elsewhere the Piazza dei Signori is narrower. This made it a little more difficult to photograph the larger landmarks which surround the piazza. One of these landmarks is the Basilica Palladiana which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site listing “City of Vicenza and the Palladian Villas of the Veneto” but more on that later.

There are several of these structures here but the tallest one here is the Torre Bissara. Contrary to my expectation, this tower is not part of a church but it is non-secular in nature. The tower dates back to the twelfth century and it was surprisingly sturdy considering how old it is. Unfortunately, it was damaged during the war but it was subsequently restored. It is now the tallest structure in the piazza and one of the most eye catching features of this beautiful square.
