Tomb of Saint Anthony of Padua
Tomb of Saint Anthony of Padua

I have arrived at what is probably the most important chapel in the Basilica of Saint Anthony of Padua – that is the Chapel of Saint Anthony. This chapel is lit brilliantly compared to the chapel of Saint James directly across it. It was obvious which one was more significant. This is also the tomb of Saint Anthony of Padua. The tomb itself is much larger than you would think. They built an entire structure outside the tomb including stairs to access the top. I am not sure what ceremonies are done here but it was obviously because this is a very significant place in the church. Most of the people who are not here for Holy Mass are at the Chapel of Saint Anthony just waiting for it to finish.

While waiting, visitors would be able stick a prayer on a dedicated area of the tomb. You can see how many people have done this since an entire side of the tomb was covered in prayers stickies. It is good to see that people follow the rules and just stick them in the designated places, though I am sure that the tomb is also guarded by security cameras. Once the Mass was finished everyone was able to get out of the chapel and move around again. I took the chance to take a photo of the tomb from the outside of the chapel. It almost looks like an altar of its own. I won’t be surprised if Mass was also celebrated in this part of the basilica.
