Frescoes Outside Pieve di San Pietro di Feletto
Frescoes Outside Pieve di San Pietro di Feletto

I was trying to follow a route around what is dubbed as the prosecco hills. A wine route which is between the towns of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene – a UNESCO World Heritage site. There are various routes one may take here since there are a few points of interest along the way. I already hit my first point of interest in Pieve di San Pietro di Feletto. A pieve is generally an old rural church with a baptistery. The Pieve di San Pietro di Feletto is an old one with the structure estimated to have been built in the 9th century. One look at it and I knew that it was something that is very old.

One of the main features of the church are the frescoes which are not unfamiliar to me. These a typical Lombard frescoes which date back to the 1500s, some of which I have seen earlier in the trip in a visit to Aquileia and especially Cividale del Friuli which are known for its Lombard temple and frescoes. Unfortunately for me, the church was closed and I can only see what is outside. Fortunately, there are some frescoes outside the walls of the church that gives me any idea what is inside. It is frustrating not to be able to get in since I can clearly see that this is very significant. From what I have seen, the frescoes are remarkably well preserved considering they are outside and somewhat exposed to the elements compared to the ones inside.
