When I saw that postcard perfect photo of Val di Funes, I immediately decided to include the Dolomites as part of my northern Italy trip. I had no idea how to get there but I will go around the Dolomites looking for the photo. Of course, you have to be really skilled and lucky as well to get that perfect photo. I illegally parked the car at someone else’s house and set out on foot to get to the viewing area. It isn’t a difficult hike and in fact I thought it was enjoyable because the weather was nice and cool and there was still a bit of sunlight left. I know that winter might not be the best time to get this photo but it is what it is.

I walked past the Chiesa di Santa Maddalena and continued on to the hill past the church. There was a pair of tourists in the distance, so I knew that I was on the right path. How do I know they were tourists, there isn’t any housing past the church and it would only be tourists or hikers who would make it out here. The trail went higher and soon enough the church was already below me. Looking at it the photo right now, it may look like it is a long walk but it isn’t really that far. The sun is already starting to set over but still illuminating the rugged peaks of the Dolomites behind the town. The photo I saw online was one of green fields but there was only white snow covered ones right now but it is still very picturesque. I think it is very much worth making the trip and climb all the way out here.
