While I never heard of the town of Werfen, when I found out that it was the filming location of the classic movie the Sound of Music, I decided to make the journey there from Salzburg. I had images of beautiful mountains and rolling hills but when I arrived there, I was met with a gloomy and frigid town. Of course, it was totally my fault for deciding to come here in the winter where it would of course be gloomy and frigid. Still I was hoping that I would be able to catch a glimpse of what made Werfen the location of the movie segment.

The actual location is actually somewhere behind the town. I had to go through the town and make my way up the hill which is behind town. It doesn’t take long to get there but because the road has a lot of ice, it took longer than I planned. I decided to take my time walking up since one could easily slide down given the road conditions. There weren’t enough vehicles here to get rid of some of the snow and ice. Just when I was thinking to myself who would be coming all the way here in winter, I saw a family making their way down the hill. They were obviously weren’t locals, so I knew that I was on the right track. I didn’t get to speak to them but we greeted each other and we were on our way.
