Taking the Istanbul Metro

Train Arriving at Halic Metro Station

When I was looking for place to stay in Istanbul, one of the things I look for is the easy access to the metro. Marpalace Hotel happens to be near one, though it isn’t exactly right beside a metro. For that I would need to go to the Golden Horn Bridge. Actually, that is the whole reason for the existence of the Golden Horn Bridge, it is to have a metro line which connects old European Istanbul with new European Istanbul. Users of the metro would have to get on the bridge and walk to the center of the bridge to access the metro. It is a scenic walk along the bridge so you won’t really feel the distance.

Inside the Istanbul Metro

It was a little annoying to have to walk that far on the bridge to access the metro but I have to remember that this metro station serves both sides of the Golden Horn, so one side can’t be nearer than the other. This is the first time I have been to this type of metro station. The station is open air with some shelter in case of rain. You can see much of Istanbul from here. There are electronic signs which tell you how long until the next trains arrive. It was mid morning and the trains were quite frequent. The train itself is modern and clean. There weren’t that many passengers that moment so I was able to easy find a seat. Honestly, I didn’t expect Istanbul to have such a modern metro system. I was under the impression that it won’t have one, having seen Istanbul only from the vicinity of the hotel which is the old Istanbul. Seeing this gave me an better impression of the city.
