If you were to ask me to name any of Türkiye’s landmarks, I can only tell you Hagia Sophia and that’s about it. I don’t know much about Türkiye coming here but I know that I would at least have to drop by the Hagia Sophia. The Hagia Sophia is undoubtedly Türkiye’s most well known landmark and it is right here in the city of Istanbul. I have just finished visiting the Sultan Ahmed Mosque or the Blue Mosque and I thought it was a very impressive monument. The mosque is actually inspired by the Hagia Sophia and it is no coincidence that it was erected just across the Hagia Sophia.

The Hagia Sophia was built during the time of Emperor Justinian I as a Christian church but it was converted into a mosque when the Ottoman Turks took over the area. Probably because of the origins of Hagia Sophia as a church that Ahmed I decided to built a mosque that would rival the Hagia Sophia all from scratch. The Hagia Sophia is just a short walk away from the Sultan Ahmed Mosque. I actually didn’t notice it when I was making my way to the Blue Mosque which is why I was surprised to see how close to each other they are.
