Going to Rheinfels Castle

Some Ruins at the Rheinfels Castle

Some Ruins at the Rheinfels Castle

I was walking up a hill behind the town of Sankt Goar which is along the Rhine. There are castle ruins here which can be seen from the town below and I thought that it might be worth visiting the castle first while I was waiting for the sun to rise below. From the town, I can see that parts of the castle are already illuminated which made me think that this would be a good activity in the mean time. I saw a sign at the train station about some shuttle which brings visitors to the castle but it didn’t seem to be operating at the moment, perhaps for the season since they don’t expect any visitors to go there that time of the year.

The bus would have gone via the road behind the town and it was a straightforward but steep road. I wasn’t expecting to do any hiking here so I was just hoping that it won’t be a very strenuous hike. A lot of castles would be built on high ground which is a practical decision as far as defense is concerned but one can’t help but think that they built the castle here because the scenery is just so beautiful. I can imagine walking up in the morning to such beautiful scenery. The top of the hill is marked by a parking lot obviously for visitors to the castle. There were hardly any vehicles in the parking lot and that worried me. Hopefully it isn’t what I think it means.
