Köln Promenade at Night

Crossing the River Rhine at Night

Night time came quickly in winter in the city of Köln or Cologne in Germany. I haven’t really been out exploring the whole day, in fact, I had merely gone around the block just to get a feel of the city and I think I like it. I was crossing the River Rhine on the Hohenzollern Bridge and I can see that it has indeed gotten quite dark here. It was just as well since I didn’t want to be out in the freezing cold anymore, maybe I could start looking for a place to eat. Looking around I can see that Köln is a rather flat city. There are a handful of obvious tall structures here but for the most part, it is rather flat.

The most prominent building here is obviously the Köln cathedral. However much I would like to take night shots here with the cathedral, the lights are still not turned on. It was unfortunate since the cathedral would look black in my photos. Having a magnificent piece of architecture lit up would be very nice. Ultimately, I never saw the cathedral lit up. I thought that it was only because it was a weekend but it was the same for the following nights that I was here. I can only assume that this was done to conserve energy since it is a very critical issue at the time of my visit. The bridge itself has several lights on and it looks good at night. The cathedral on the other hand would require more than just several lights since it is a massive structure. I saw photos of the cathedral lit up at night and it looks very good. Hopefully, when the energy crisis eases, I would get to see the Köln Cathedral in all it’s glory.
