Rocks Around the Horseshoe Bend

I was very impressed with the Horseshoe Bend at Page in Arizona. This is one of the must see places here in Page. It is not that far outside the town though getting there might be a little challenge without a car. The Horseshoe Bend is a natural bend of the Colorado River. It is actually quite surprising to see how large this area is. The Colorado River is far below the viewing area and it is typical of almost all views of the Colorado River that I have seen thus far. It used to be that this area was at sea level however, this area was uplifted and eventually the Colorado River started carving out the rock to how it is today.

What you can see today is the result of millions of years of weathering. Even the surrounding rocks here at the view point are worth a look as well. The red sandstone can be seen forming layers. No doubt this would be a geologist’s dream. For me, it is a great that I can visit this place in person and take photos. It is hard to imagine that this was water millions of years ago since all you see here is just desert. I’m even surprised to see that the Colorado River is still here in the middle of the desert.
