Going Inside the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Strasbourg

The Cathedral of Notre Dame de Strasbourg has got to be one of the tallest churches that I have been to. The singular tower was so tall that for a period of two hundred years, it was the tallest building on earth. It is now the sixth tallest church in the world. The beautiful red sandstone used to build the building gives it a beautiful shade of red. It was almost difficult to properly appreciate the beauty of the church especially the designs high up the church. It would have been strange too since you would wonder who would can see that high up. Telescopes were only just invented when it was built. It just goes to show you the kind of care and dedication that was done to build this magnificent building.

I was so amazed at the height of the cathedral that I almost forgot to go in the cathedral itself. Fortunately, this cathedral is in active use. As you might expect, it is dark inside as it is typical of gothic cathedrals. There is a large rose window or oculus in the facade of the church and it lets the setting sun’s light in. For the rest, the roof is so high up that it is difficult to make windows that can illuminate the inside. There are electric lamps inside the church to help with that. It is quite intimidating to see a church of this size. Such is the purpose of a gothic cathedral as it is meant to express the majesty of God.
