Sherkin Lighthouse

Sherkin Lighthouse

Sherkin Lighthouse

One of the most interesting and strangest structures in the village of Baltimre is definitely the Baltimore Beacon. The beacon serves as a marker or navigational aid for sailors. These days it is more of a tourist attraction and it is one of the main reasons to explore the village of Baltimore. The view from the Baltimore Beacon was surprisingly good. The wind was picking up so I couldn’t stay that long. However, from this perch, you can see quite a lot of the area, it is not surprising that they picked this spot to build the Baltimore Beacon.

Can You See Sherkin Lighthouse?

Can You See Sherkin Lighthouse?

The cliff top actually has a good view of the nearby islands. In particular, Sherkin Island is right in front of you. I was expecting Sherkin Island to be a small island. It really is small but it is much larger than I expected. Visitors would need to take a fifteen minute ferry to the island. I didn’t have time to visit these islands which is a shame because it seems that there are some interesting places to see there. However, from the side of the Baltimore Beacon, you can already see a few landmarks on Sherkin Island. The lighthouse is a distinct white against the dark rocks of Sherkin Island. Much like the Baltimore Beacon, the lighthouse is also a navigational aid but probably much more useful because it is actually a functioning lighthouse. Looking at the location of the lighthouse, it seems to be quite high up, I don’t know if it is easy enough to access when you actually visit Sherkin Island.
