Baltimore Castle

Baltimore Castle

Baltimore Castle

The entire setup of the village of Baltimore is very attractive. You have a beautiful natural harbor here and you have the village which rises above the harbor. This gives a great view on both sides. You can see the harbor from the restaurants and hotels in the village. Conversely, you see the charming village of Baltimore rising above the harbor as you look back from the water. There is one more prominent structure here which also rises above the village – Baltimore Castle. It is probably not a surprise to know that there is a castle here in the village. The local name here is Dun na Sead Castle and it says there on the door. For people who won’t be able to remember the Irish name, there is Baltimore Castle.

Gate to Baltimore Castle

The castle is right in the center of the village. It is probably one of the tallest and most prominent structures here. These days it looks more like an old stone house rather than a castle. I wasn’t sure what the structure was initially so I went for a closer look. I would imagine that it would be possible to visit the castle but I think because of the pandemic, it won’t be open just yet. I went right up to the gates of the castle to find it closed, no surprise there. However, there seemed to be activity behind the closed gates. I hear kids playing and even a dog trying to sniff me through the gaps in the gate. Obviously, I won’t be able to get in. Again, that would probably have to happen in a different trip.
