Old Head Castle

I was quite happy with my visit to the Old Head of Kinsale. There were amazing cliff-side scenery. I heard that there is a lighthouse here but I don’t see it anywhere. This brings us to the elephant in the room, the rest of the Old Head of Kinsale is blocked off an considered as private property. It is currently operated as an exclusive golf course, so if you have plans on playing golf here or perhaps want to have dinner here, then you get a chance to see what is beyond the the walls of the golf course. Yes, the golf course has walls.

Apparently, there was an old castle here are the old head. From what I can see, much of what remains here is the tower right beside the gate of the golf course and the walls of the castle itself. I don’t know the extent of the walls since the rest of the area is surrounded by cliffs and can’t be viewed from the land. The old castle here has its roots from the third century, which makes it very old. I don’t know if anything is left of the old castle inside the golf course. It is unfortunate that a heritage site like the Old Head Castle would be closed off from the public. While I understand the need for investment, I still can’t fathom why locals aren’t allowed. Perhaps there should be a provision on the contract saying that a facility for the public be built to allow continued access to the site.
