Going to Doon Rock

Path to Doon Rock

Path to Doon Rock

Doon Well is about as underwhelming as anything else. The fabled inauguration site for the O’Donnell chieftains is just a simple well which appeared to be recently renovated. It seems to be treated as a holy well as there are photos of Jesus Christ near the plaque of Doon Well. I have seen this kind of thing before. Holy well are thought to have miraculous properties which is probably why the O’Donnell’s chose this place to be where they proclaim their chieftains. There isn’t a huge amount of water here, so I don’t know if there is something to this well. Either way, there wasn’t anyone to talk about the well, anyone is free to come here and visit. Kudos to the owners of the land here.

Gate to Doon Rock

Gate to Doon Rock

There is more to this place than Doon Well, not too far away from here yet another historical site. Doon Rock is actually where the rituals took place however it is not that easily accessible. Instead, there is now a trail which takes visitors around the area. This is probably due to the proximity to the holy well that they chose this site for their rituals. It is said that the actual stone is not there anymore but instead there is a more modern plaque, not unlike what is there for the Doon Well. The trail is easily accessible from Doon Well, you just need to go through a gate and you are off.
