Doon Well

Doon Well

It was another day free of lockdown. And I, who didn’t want to be stuck at home, decided to go for a drive. I have been to various places in county Donegal and I think it is a wild and beautiful county. One of the places which I have always passed by but never visited is Doon Well. I would always see the signs to this place whenever I travel north. I think it was time to pay it a visit. It is not too far from where I was, so this was one of the places which I thought I could always visit. I think I am familiar enough with the main roads in Donegal that I would not need a satnav for this trip.

The signs were easy enough to follow, it goes off from the main road and all the way to a dead end. At this point I wasn’t sure where I was. I think I did find the right place since there was a large parking area and some kind of pond near a house. There wasn’t huge sign proclaiming this to be Doon Well and looking at the well, it seems to appear to be too “new”. Doon Well is known as the place where Donegal chieftains were inaugurated. The site has been used for centuries. It seems that the well was refurbished hopefully make it last another few centuries. I understand that the this was done to preserve the site but it kind of loses the authenticity by rebuilding it like that.
