Inside the Bahia Palace

I decided to spend the day in the medina of Marrakesh which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. There are a number of historical sites within the medina to keep you busy. My first stop if the Bahia Palace. There were some signs pointing to the Bahia palace but there weren’t a lot to help me locate the palace. I would also find it in Google Maps but I would stand right next to the pin in Google Maps and I still couldn’t see it. See, the palace is surrounded by walls and I needed to go all the way around the palace to find the entrance which itself is not really that prominent. The only reason I found it was because there were a lot of people streaming into it.

The Bahia Palace as you can tell is a palace built by a sultan. The intention was to build the largest and most impressed palace in the world. At this point, I don’t know whether the sultan succeeded since the palace I see isn’t that different from a large riad. That is probably an exaggeration but so far I didn’t think it would be anywhere close to being the most beautiful palace in the world. Having said that, parts of the palace have very impressive Islamic architecture. I was most impressed with the windows as well as some screens which they have built neared the roof.
