Deirbhile’s Twist

I was making my way to what is known as Deirbhile’s Twist. I got to find out who this Deirbhile is. Apparently she is a saint who was known for her beauty. To keep suitors away, she gouged out her own eyes. The healing waters of a spring eventually restored her sight. It seems that this is where she settled down after traveling all the way from county Meath, a long distance away considering there weren’t any vehicles during the 6th century. There are a couple of places which bear the name of Saint Deirbhile, one of them is this.

Deirbhile’s Twist is a structure made out of multiple slabs of stone. This forms a rough spiral which gave rise to the name twist. When I first saw this, I thought that it was an amazing relic. There are a lot of these types of neolithic structures and I wouldn’t be surprised if this was one of them. Except that it wasn’t. This is actually a sculpture made to look like those neolithic structures. I guess the twist thing was a giveaway since most these tend to be circular and not spiral as what they have here. If anything, it is “just” a piece of public art. I took my photos and continued on.
