Going to Tully Castle

Tully Castle

Tully Castle

For visitors to county Fermanagh, visiting the plantation castles is a way to understand the history of Ireland and the United Kingdom. It is during these times that the worst of the incidents happened. The English were rightfully seen as invaders and they were constantly harassed by the Irish. Land of the locals have been taken away from them and they of course want it back. The Maguire family is one of these clans which had their lands taken from them. They were the main group which constantly harass the English to get what is theirs back. Tully Castle is one of the sites of these skirmishes.

Approaching Tully Castle

Tully Castle is another plantation castle which built on top of a hill. The Scottish type of castle was built for John Hume. When the Maguires arrived to claim the castle, as the story goes, there were only women and children with the men mostly away. The women and children were then killed. The Humes, however managed to survived but they never lived in the castle again. The castle is much more like a large house than a castle. There is wall which surrounds the castle called a bawn which marks the area of the castle itself.
