Enniskillen Castle by the River Erne

Walking Along the River Erne in Enniskillen

The drive to Enniskillen was a pleasant one. We managed to arrive at the town of Enniskillen in one piece primarily by following the signs. It was very well sign posted that it wasn’t necessary to even use satnav for this. The need for that will arise when we head out of the town to the surrounding area. For now, the main focus of this visit is the Enniskillen Castle. This castle named after the town sits long the shores of the River Erne. I was surprised to see the castle, tower and all, in remarkable condition. I have seen quite a number of castles here in Ireland and not all over them are in good condition.

Perhaps the most prominent feature of this castle are the two towers on each side of the main castle building. The towers are topped with conical roofs which make the castle look much like the castles of fairy tales. This is probably the first castle I have seen in Ireland which has this conical roof. A lot of the castles I have seen here are large stone building largely devoid of character. The castle sits proudly along the River Erne and it has a nice little promenade in front of it so people can admire the castle.
