The Porte de Bourgogne in Bordeaux

When I travel, I typically don’t like staying in the big cities. That is probably true when traveling in Asia which has a lot of modern cities. However, Europe has a lot of these old cities which have beautiful structures which have been accumulated over the centuries. It seems that Bordeaux is one of these countries which have a lot of these old and beautiful structures all in one place. This is happened because of a culture which knows how to preserve their heritage and it is not a new thing since the city has undergone urban renewal several times.

At the foot of a major bridge in Bordeaux sit another of these monuments. Porte de Bourgogne is a gate in Roman style. It is actually not that old having been built in the 18th century. However, the design is one which was taken from the ancient Roman structures making it look older than it really was. The Porte de Bourgogne is one of the major gateway arches of the city of Bordeaux. This one is effectively the end point of the road from Paris, which gives visitors a grand welcome once they drive into the city. As far as the arch is concerned, it was that interesting. There were carvings on the walls of the Porte de Bourgogne, unlike some of the triumphal arches which I have seen here in France.
