Walled City of Avignon

Walking on the Walls of Avignon

Walking on the Walls of Avignon

From the Rocher des Doms, one can see much of the northern part of the medieval city of Avignon. This is made possible by the fact that Rocher des Doms sits on top of a small hill which overlooks the northern part of the old town. I was only then that I was reminded that Avignon is still a walled city. I passed through the city walls when I was entering the medieval town from the south side. They were imposing to say the least. I didn’t get a chance to follow the wall all around but I think most if not all of the medieval town is still surrounded by the walls.

I was hoping to get from Rocher des Doms to the next part of the tour. There seems to be a smaller gate which would connect us to the next spot but it was closed. That was rather unfortunate, since visitors would have to go all the way down the tower and to the street below. It would have been an interesting visit if it was possible to walk from the park to the bridge area. Unfortunately, it was probably difficult to set up a ticket booth there so visitors need to go down and go another way to continue on. This however, gives visitors a chance to see the walls up close. Much like the southern end of the medieval town, the walls are in remarkable condition.
