High Tech Tour of the Palais des Papes

Audio and Video Guide at the Palais des Papes

Audio and Video Guide at the Palais des Papes

In a lot of my visits here in France, I had difficulty understanding what I was seeing. There would be the odd site which has an audio guide but for the most part, I was on my own. There would be times that I wouldn’t really mind but there would be times that I would really want to know. Fortunately, the Palais des Papes in the medieval city of Avignon provides an audio guide for visitors. And it is not just an audio guide but it also provides a video as well. I was actually impressed when I was handed a tablet and a pair of headphones as part of the audio package.

The tablet was obviously the most eye catching device that I was handed. It was actually a Huawei Mediapad and it has a customized application which guides visitors as they move through the palace. The app also makes use of the camera to be able to tell you where you are. There are stickers which can be scanned by the camera and they would effectively unlock parts of the guide, not unlike a game. The tablet also provides all of the information that you would need when going through the palace. Because kids would probably need to handle these devices, the have been heavily protected by cases. People would go through the palace, tablets in hand and headphones plugged in. This provided a very enjoyable experience when exploring the Palais des Papes.
