Walls of Avignon

A Gate Along the Walls of Avignon

A Gate Along the Walls of Avignon

I have actually spent several days in the city of Avignon but I never really got around to explore the city itself. In all of the days so far I have stayed in Avignon, I would leave the city for a nearby place. The connections here in Avignon were perfect for my purposes. Now, it is time for me to actually see the city. It was the holiday season, maybe I would find something interesting there. My hotel isn’t within the medieval city. In fact, it is just outside the city walls. My room actually has a good view of the walls and I also pass through the gates each time I go for dinner.

I started early in the day. I don’t think the medieval town is that large that I would need a full day to explore. I would probably get tired anyway so I would want to be able to get back to the hotel to rest up. It seems that the weather that day was good, hopefully I would be able to get decent shots here. I never had good luck photographing city walls since they usually turn out dark. The walls of Avignon have been whitewashed and probably look better in photos. The gates have towers where guards can be stationed to make sure only the correct people get in. They have openings for what appears to be archers. This helps provide some level of protection against sharpshooters. Much of the walls seem to be intact and I don’t know how far they stretch. This seems to be a good introduction to the medieval city of Avignon.
