I was very impressed with the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière. The exterior of the basilica didn’t give any indication to the richness of the design of the interior of church. The church is a Catholic church dedicated to Our Lady of Fourvière, who was said to have a hand in saving Lyon from several disasters. The church is one of the highlights in a visit to Fourvière Hill. To be honest, I didn’t think much about this church when I came to Fourvière, however seeing the interior of the basilica changed my mind. This really is a place one needs to visit when in Fourvière Hill.

Compared to how narrow the basilica is, the roof of the church is actually quite high, almost reminiscent of gothic architecture. I like the liberal use of gold in the church which gives it a brighter feel, as opposed to dark gothic churches. The altar is naturally one of the main features of the church. It is surrounded by several stained glass windows which makes the altar area look brigher. This is probably done on purpose since it is the most important part of the church. It would have been nice to attend a service here but there wasn’t one at the time of my visit.
