Arriving in Wadowice

Square in Wadowice

Square in Wadowice

After half a day of exploring the Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, I found myself in the city of Wadowice. This wasn’t part of my plan but the breadth of Kalwaria helped make the decision for me. The city of Wadowice isn’t that well known but it is known for one thing, that is, for being the birthplace of Saint Pope John Paul II. Growing up, I learned Pope John Paul II, for the longest time, he was the only Pope I knew. I knew that he was from Poland, specifically Krakow, but it turned out that he was only bishop of Krakow. He actually hails from the nearby city of Wadowice.

The city of Wadowice is a bit further up the road from Kalwaria Zebrzydowska. I was observing my progress on my phone and I just got off the bus when I thought I was already there. The traffic on the way to the bus terminal at Wadowice was quite bad due to some road works, I realized that I should have gotten off much earlier. The centerpiece of the city is a square which is bounded by the Basilica of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the ancestral home of the former pope. It seems that there is a schedule for the tours of his home but I would have to wait after lunch to join it. For now, I will just hang around the square.
