Harvesting From Prisoners at the Auschwitz

Children's Shoes at the Auschwitz

Children’s Shoes at the Auschwitz

This is the first time that I got to know more about the events which happened at the Nazi concentration camps. While I am aware that there were horrors which were done here. I didn’t really have any idea what. Here at the Auschwitz museum, I got to know how people were reduced to nothing but a number and how every little thing they had was taken away from them just because of their lineage. It was shocking to see the amount of stuff which was taken and collected from the prisoners here at the Auschwitz. The previous exhibit showed the number of glasses frames which were taken from the prisoners. The next room was about to shock me even more.

Hall of Shoes at the Auschwitz

Hall of Shoes at the Auschwitz

There was a long hall with two exhibits of the same thing one each side of the hall. It was dark and hard to tell because of how many there were. Upon closer inspection, I realized that these were shoes. There were countless number of shoes here which were collected from the prisoners. This was one of the more moving and disturbing places I have ever been to. It is one thing to have a disturbing art exhibit, but this was real and almost surreal. It makes you want to believe that this couldn’t have happened. But it did. Millions of people used to wear these shoes and have been summarily executed. Some people in the hall would walk through the hall and not say a word. Some would take a few photos and that was it. It obviously had an impact of everyone who was here.
