Wawel Castle
The apartment I was staying in is just a block away from the Old City of Krakow. That might be a little misleading since the Old City of Krakow is actually quite large, in fact much larger than the Old City of Warsaw. It requires a fair bit of walking to explore the old city so it is best to get proper walking shoes when visiting the royal city. For a long time, Krakow was the seat of the royal throne in Poland. It wasn’t until King Sigismund III decided to get up and move the royal court to Warsaw. However, a lot of history has already been built in those centuries.
Walking Up Wawel Castle
Depending on where you are coming from, one of the most prominent structures when entering the old city of Krakow is the royal castle called Wawel Castle. The castle actually is on an hill appropriately named Wawel Hill. It seems that it has been inhabited for a long time which is when the rulers of Poland eventually decided to settle here. What ruler would not have a castle? Eventually, one of Poland’s largest castles rose and became a symbol of Poland. It wasn’t just the kings who lived here but also the President for a time. These days it is now a museum.
