Going to the Skellig Islands

I was thrilled to land a seat on one of the boats which go to the Skellig Islands. The weather turned bad that day and I thought that was it. However, a lot of people cancelled their trips. Even the boat operators cancelled trips because the seas were so rough here. It was miracle I managed to get a seat. I don’t know what the other people by the pier were waiting for but I quickly got in the boat. I just hope that I won’t be the last guy to board a boat that will sink in the rough sea.

The boat operators were very well prepared for this trip. We were each provided raincoats. There were not the ordinary raincoats you can buy in the shop but really heavy duty ones. The rubber was thick which made it quite heavy. It was actually difficult to put on, especially the pants. Given the seriousness of the waterproofing which we have been given, I expect to get a heavy soaking. I remember the last boat trip I took was at Tory Island. The weather was actually good that day but the seas were very rough and I got a good soak and they never provided heavy rain gear. The boat operators here at Portmagee take your dryness very seriously.
