Skellig Boat Trip

Landing at Skellig Michael

Landing at Skellig Michael

The whole point of me coming to county Kerry was to get a chance to see the Skellig Islands which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. These days it seems to be popular because apparently this was where Luke Skywalker lived. A poster here in Portmagee proclaimed, “Skellig Michael: Where Star Wars was filmed”. I cringed when I saw this but for a lot of people Star Wars was their introduction to this remote island. I didn’t manage to land a booking with the boat operators so I tried again the next day. The weather was bad that morning and I felt disappointed that it won’t be a nice day. However, the lady at the bed and breakfast, knowing my predicament, told me that I might get lucky. If the weather is bad, many people might cancel then I might be able to get on.

I rushed to Portmagee in the hopes of getting a slot in a boat. Along the way, I wondered how I would know who to talk to. I was told that I would know when I see them. They can’t be any more correct. There was a crowd of people at the pier and I was trying to figure out who to talk to. There he was, a large man with an eye patch, the ship’s captain, no wooden leg nor hook, though. I asked if he had space for one more and sure enough there really was one more. I thought I struck the jackpot. I quickly boarded the ship and we were preparing to depart. I couldn’t believe how lucky I was.
