Seven Sisters

Stone Circle at Blarney Castle

Stone Circle at Blarney Castle

The grounds of Blarney Castle don’t seem to have a shortage of stories to tell. On the way out of the park, I came across a stone circle which is quite common in Ireland. I would like to think that is it something like Stonehenge but made with single stones. I think these places have some mystical air about them as no doubt television and books have come to tell us. There doesn’t seem to be any indication how old this stone circle is. But the story about has been passed from generation to generation.

Seven Sisters at Blarney Castle

Seven Sisters at Blarney Castle

A king of Munster once had seven daughters and two sons. He rode out to battle with his two sons but both were slain in battle. On the way back, he passed by a stone circle which had nine stones. He ordered his men to knock down two of the nine stones in memory of his two fallen sons. The stone circle remains to this day. It still has the nine stones, two of which have been toppled down. The remaining standing stones have been called the Seven Sisters. I think this was the first stone circle which I have visited. There is an eerie feeling when observing the stones. I was almost afraid to stand in the middle of the stone circle for fear I may be teleported somewhere else.
