Gates of Cahir Castle

Behind the Gates of Cahir Castle

I sped through Cahir Castle and I was thinking maybe it was a little too fast. In this trip, this was my fifth castle so I hope you forgive me if I went through it too fast. It was bound to happen sooner or later. I started to think all castles look alike. Some may be better maintained than others while other are totally abandoned. So far, I have visited the better maintained ones, mass tourism usually doesn’t reach the more ruined ones. Cahir castle is a very well maintained castle, perhaps almost too well maintained, it sorts of loses it authenticity.

Perhaps I would have preferred those more isolated type of castles. The town of Cahir is practically built around the castle. Then again, having the castle right in the middle of town really gives a town a lot of character. After all, it is not a lot of town which can brag about having a very old castle in the middle of town. I was on the way out of the castle and I noticed the gates of the castle. It seemed like entered through what was supposed to be just a side door. The main gates of the castle were closed, probably open only for special occasions.
