One of the highlights of a visit to the Old Town of Segovia is the Alcazar de Segovia. Like much of the old Spanish towns here, an alcazar was built. In this case, the alcazar of segovia was built in back when large parts of Spain was under control of the Moors. It was built on the remains of an old fort which was similarly built on the remains of the of Roman fort. It is fascinating to know this history and how conquerors would just build on top of each other. When Segovia was retaken, the alcazar was retained and improved. It was not exactly clear when the alcazar was built. But there were references to it mentioned in manuscripts.

The alcazar of Segovia is markedly different from the alcazar of Toledo, which looks more like a modern government building. The alcazar of Segovia has a more “traditional” fairy tale castle looks. It seems modifications have been made after Segovia was recaptured. More specifically, the pointy Disney castle towers were inspired from more famous castles in Europe. Speaking of inspiration, it is said that the Alcazar of Segovia was one of the inspirations for Cinderella’s Castle. You can see the similarity in the design of the castle towers.
