The beauty of Lijiang Ancient Town is only further accentuated by the presence of numerous streams and waterways which flow throughout the town. The meltwater from faraway mountains supplies this water to the town and it looks great. The waterways aren’t large enough for boats to sail in thankfully but this add a certain beauty to the town. For the most part, the water flowing through the town is certainly clean. The locals take good care of the water while ignorant tourists may wittingly or unwittingly pollute them. I would rather not think of these waters ways as drainage systems which modern cities have but rather part of the water system which is in use now.

The waterways play a practical role in Lijiang as well, since it is considered clean, it is not surprising to see the locals clean their stuff with the water. I seriously doubt they would just take the water from the stream and drink them but they do use it for other stuff such as cleaning dishes and doing the laundry. I passed by a structure which they called a well. It has three holes each on dedicated to a particular function, one would be for food, one would be cleaning food and the last one would be for washing clothes. There would also be times where the individual holes will be used.
