It was already night time and the people of Haerbin are out in full force in Zhongyang Street. Of course, this being China, where there are crowds, there will always be hawkers. Interestingly enough, there weren’t people just approaching to sell stuff as I have seen in other cities. However, there was order amid the chaos. Off to the side of the group of people performing line dancing, was a row for snack stalls.

Candied Fruit Anyone?

Candied Fruit Anyone?

Most of these stores have already set up shop in the afternoon, but they really come alive at night, most especially on a weekend. The perennial northern Chinese fruit snack – candied hawthorne 糖葫芦 is all over the place. Not only hawthorne is candied here but other fruits as well, usually it is the softer types, oranges, grapes and even kiwi fruit. The cold here in Haerbin is perfect for keeping the candy solid. Any warmer and it will melt away.
