I decided to eat at Wangfujing that night having gotten back to Beijing city in an amazing two hours from Chengde. I was trying to find a place which would satisfy me, but most of the food in Wangfujing were espensive restaurants. I ended up walking into a mall, actually the only one I walked into. This turned out to be a real mall, in the sense that it had a lot of individual stores inside the building, much different from the shopping centers that line the famous shopping street.

There was a food court on top of that mall. Which surprisingly turned out to be Food Republic 大食代. Food Republic has an extensive network of food courts in Singapore and other countries. I was surprised to find one here. However, the Food Republic here has a twist. To order food, you need to purchase a refundable card which you put money in. I have seen this system elsewhere and I irritates me no end. I got the card and refunded as soon as ordered. I honestly don’t see the point of this system since all it does is it inconveniences customers.

The food was all Chinese as expected although the Food Republic in Singapore tends to have a little more international flavor. I ended up eating a rice meal which is served in a bamboo bowl. It looked very tasty, but actually it was a little disappointing. Let’s just say that it doesn’t taste as good as it looked. It was quite late and the staff was already having their dinner. The mall was also almost closed, but it didn’t really matter since I don’t need to buy anything there.
