The Pristine Loboc River

One of the most popular sights in Bohol is the Loboc River. It is the river right next to the Church of Saint Peter the Apostle in the town of Loboc. The river winds several kilomters inland into the the jungles of Bohol. One look at the Loboc River and it is easy to see why it is so popular. It has been named one of the cleanest rivers in the country. The Boholanos are doubtless proud of this fact and actively maintain the cleanliness of the river.

Popular here are the river cruises along the Loboc River. There is a major ferry terminal along the river where tourists get on the boats and take in the wonderful scenery of the river. To get to the terminal from the Loboc Church, one will have to cross a rather infamous bridge. This bridge was supposed to be part of a highway cutting through the town of Loboc. That is a great idea, but there just one small problem. To complete the project, they would need to tear down the Loboc Church!

Unbelievable as it may seem, the project actually pushed through and the bridge was completed. Naturally, historians and conservationalists and not to mention the people of Loboc were up in arms against the demolition of the four hundred year old church. It is a testament to the amazing lack of planning by the proponents of the project. In the end, the people won and the church was thankfully not demolished. The bridge remains as a monument to the boneheadedness of the planners.

At least the bridge did not go to waste. The bridge now serves as some sort of park which connects the Church of Saint Peter the Apostle to the ferry terminal just across the bridge. Since the bridge was supposed to be part of a highway, the bridge was quite wide and there was enough space to put park benches and lights. I had no idea what happened to the money supposed to go to the rest of the project, I just hope they did not go to waste either.
