Old Town Market Place of Warsaw

Old Town Market Square in Warsaw

It was a cold and miserable day at Warsaw. It was freezing and it was constantly raining. It probably wasn’t a good time to be outside. However, it was my first day in Warsaw and I was just curious about what I can see here. It would be a shame if I just slept the day away, although the temptation to do so was very strong. I started exploring the the walls of the Old Town of Warsaw but the rain forced me back in the Old Town, closer to the apartment where I would be able to find shelter in case the weather turned worse. My apartment was actually near the main square of the Old Town – the Old Town Market Place.

Much like any major European city. Town or city squares are the norm. I have been to a few European cities and they are indeed quite common especially if the town is old. Warsaw has been in existence for centuries and the Old Town is all that Warsaw was. It has a large market square which are surrounded by guildhalls. I would imagine that there would have been a major government building here like a city hall but there didn’t seem to be one. Looking back at history, there indeed was a tall structure here but it was taken down in the 1800s. Probably because of the existence of New Town. Much like other major city squares, the Old Town Market Place of Warsaw is lined with numerous restaurants. They seemed to be quite expensive though. I had a look at the prices here so I would have an idea of the cost of dinner later.
