Exploring Fort Edam

A Look at For Edam from Behind

When I looked at the map, I discovered that there was a nearby UNESCO site which we could visit. The listing is Stelling van Amsterdam or defense of Amsterdam. This is a rather unique site because it is spread out in multiple locations, the collection of these sites makes up the listing. We won’t be able to visit all of the site but there seemed to be one which are quite nearby. It was in the city of Edam, which also happens to be known for its cheese. We didn’t come here for cheese, since we didn’t had time anyway, I just wanted to take photos of the Fort Edam which was part of the listing.

We arrived in the city of Edam and according to the map we should already be there. I was looking around the area and I noticed a small mound but didn’t really think about it. We retraced our steps and came across a sign which pointed to the fort. The path does lead to the fort but it was closed! We weren’t the only one disappointed there. Rather stereotypically, there was an old man cleaning the grounds and probably yelled at us saying that it was closed. It seemed it would be open the next day which we don’t have. Anyway, I can only take photos of the fort from outside the gates. It seemed to be one of the larger forts which make up the Stelling van Amsterdam. It can house several hundred men as well as a lot of armaments. The grass mound I saw, turned out to be the fort itself. I guess if I were an invader, I would have been shot very quickly.
