The Ir.D.F. Woudagemaal Visitor Center

When we first arrived at the Ir.D.F. Woudagemaal, we weren’t sure how to go about exploring the UNESCO World Heritage Site. There was a door into the main building, which really looks like a factory building. I tried entering the place but I was met by someone who asked me to go to the visitor center. It wasn’t very obvious where it was but hidden behind the hedges was the visitor center. It has an interesting architecture. The visitor center sits above a small not very clean looking pond. I think there green stuff is algae but I didn’t really want to know. The visitor center looks like a long container on stilts. There is a long elevated walkway which leads underneath the visitor center. From here visitors can enter the center.

As one might expect the center tells the story of the Ir.D.F. Woudagemaal, it is in English but I just want to go inside the pumping station and we haven’t got all day. There was someone to meet us and we were told there is a ticket to enter the facility. Visitors can only go in via guided tour but that was what we were there for. We were told that there is a group just departing for their tour and we can join them if we wanted to. She was worried that we would be joining a German speaking group but we didn’t really care that much. The tour guide was considerate enough to speak some English for us but I don’t think it was easy for her to be juggling three different languages at the same time. Curiously enough despite her limited English, we managed to understand what was going on. Probably because the tour guide would say the English names just to keep us interested.
