Even though we were enjoying drinks at the Dulle Griet, it was already time for dinner. We intended to find this place we found on the internet which supposedly serves grandma’s cooking. I take that to mean local food. I had a few Belgian specialty dishes and I didn’t think they were bad at all. If this is a place where you would feel at home if you were Belgian, then I think I would like this place. The place was quite out of the way, since we needed to walk quite far to find the place. It wasn’t exactly in the city center and I think it was in a more residential neighborhood. The place was still nice since we got to walk across the canals here in Ghent. I think that was also a nice experience since you go away from the tourist route.

Het Gouden Hoofd is billed as grandma’s cooking. There were already people eating by the time we found the place. It wasn’t as homey as I thought it would be. But it was more like bistro type of place. Somehow there weren’t any tables available in the restaurant and we were just offered a place at the bar. They do serve food at the bar so I guess that was okay for us. The menu is written on the wall, but it was not in English and we needed some help with translation. I had been trying to get my hands on a Belgian classic called waterzooi which is a kind of Flemish seafood stew. The name stood out in the menu though so that was a no brainer for me. The portion unfortunately, wasn’t good enough for me. I wasn’t exactly very happy with the taste either since it wasn’t that special. My friend had what seems to be grilled pork, which wasn’t very satisfying either. I guess this is one of those places for dates and not for having a satisfying meal. I like my portions big but I guess it is not their fault. We did go back to Dulle Griet after that so it wasn’t that bad.
