Jeanneke Pis

Brussels’ most famous statue is the Manneken Pis, which is a statue of a small boy taking a piss. I think I have seen that statue in photos but I didn’t know it was in Brussels until a good friend told me about it. I managed to find the Manneken Pis quite easily since there were numerous signs pointing to it. Interestingly, there is a female version of it and it seems to be a curiosity. The Jeanneke Pis is relatively young having been sculpted in 1987. Far younger than the 400 years old statue of the famous boy. However, the Jeanneke Pis is quite a challenge to find. There are no public signs to point the way to the statue so we had to rely on Google Maps.

We had to go back and forth to find the place. It seems it was in the restaurant area which we went to previously but we just couldn’t find it. The stall owners were very distracting which made it more difficult to find the place. Turns out it really was in that area but she was hidden in a small street. To top it all up, she was in a cage. Jeanneke Pis is a statue of a small girl squatting down and taking a piss. There is a heavy iron fence separating her from the outside world. I thought it was a strange contrast to how public Manneken Pis is. Apparently, she has been subject to numerous vandalism and thus the supposed reason for the cage.
