Bruges Historical Town

Even though that Bruges is considered to be a city, a walk through its cobbled streets would lead you to think that it is just a small town. It doesn’t have the trappings of a modern high tech city such as a metro system but it has an efficient bus system. Curiously, they don’t have a tram system unlike the other Belgian cities I have visited. I guess it is because they don’t want to ruin the historical center by laying down tram tracks all over the place. After all, it is easy enough to cycle through the town if you are up to it. I prefer walking since you get to experience the city a little better compared to going by bicycle, that is aside from the fact that I’m not exactly very comfortable riding one.

It was only twelve noon and we already went for our first beer. We happened to see what is arguably one of the best beers in the world. Sorry, it is not Carlsberg. Beer rankings can be unreliable but there is a lot of opinions that the Westvleteren XII is one of the best ones around. I don’t know about that but it was quite rich and unlike any I have tasted before. Again, I’m no beer critic. We also had lunch along the river where we had where is Belgium’s most popular dishes or snacks depending who you ask. Moules Frites is mussels with fries. It was surprisingly good considering how humble the ingredients were. The mussels were cooked in a very tasty and creamy broth which you can’t get enough of. I had to dig deep into the pot for more broth. To me, it was more of a snack, probably better with beer. I guess people don’t eat that heavy here.
