Arrival at the Historic City of Bruges

Walking Through the Streets of Bruges

Walking Through the Streets of Bruges

Despite me not being able to plan for this trip to Belgium, I still have a back up plan which is to trace UNESCO World Heritage sites. I am sure that these are all worth visiting. As long as I have these in the list of places to visit, we should be okay. We have already visited the La Grand-Place in Brussels, our next stop is the historic city of Bruges. I did manage to read up a bit about Bruges and one thing which was that it is overrun by tourists. I have experience mass tourism before and I sure didn’t like it. But people come here for a reason, I want to see why. I think it was a good sign that there weren’t too many people getting off a Bruges. It was certainly now where near the level I have seen in Asia.

From the train station, you can choose to take a bus or just walk. We chose the latter. After all, part of the experience in visiting a historic city was to be able to walk through the streets of this place. We weren’t alone in choosing to walk. I suspect that the city center isn’t really that far anyway. Already upon entrance into the city you can see beautiful centuries old houses and buildings. Most of it is very well maintained, obviously for tourism purposes. Interestingly, the place is still inhabited by the folk who lived there. It is not like the La Grand-Place which was mostly turned into a retail district which a lot of shops in the ground floor. We don’t really know where we are headed but I think I’m going to like this place.
