Beer in Belgium

Trappistes Rochefort 8

For some reason, we didn’t really linger that much in the Brussels City Center. A lot of the shops were already closed and there wasn’t much to sight see at night. We were also tired from the long trip earlier and we wanted to rest early. We only dropped out stuff at the hotel and we immediately set off so I guess we deserve a little more rest today. My friend loves to drink and it seems he wasn’t aware that Belgium is quite well known for beer. I was only introduced to this fact two years ago and I was also looking forward to know what the fuss was all about. I am no big drinker either but I will try their local beers here since this is part of the Belgium experience.

A lot of people may know that Belgium has a great beer tradition. However, it seems that the Belgians aren’t that huge drinkers themselves. Sure, a pint or two every now and then, but they aren’t obsessed drinking it like other European countries. It is probably because of the huge variety of beers available here. I used to think that beer was boring since it was always the same bitter stuff. I only knew about those mass marketed ones. But even in Belgium there are craft breweries as well further diversifying the field. We head back to the hotel and we found out that there was a bar there. We asked for a recommendation and I got a Trappistes Rochefort 8.

It seems that Trappist monks here love brewing their own beers and they became quite good at it. I would be in no position to describe a beer myself but I thought it was much better than the famous brands out there. The alcohol content is much higher than the mass market ones and somehow it makes things better. I decided that I would try all there new drinks here while I have the chance, hopefully I won’t get too drunk.
