Cemetery at the Ruins of the Cong Abbey in the Village of Cong

When I first caught a glimpse of the small village of Cong, at least the old town area, I thought it felt like an abandoned village. The reason was because there seemed to be a large concentration of ruins. The ruins in Ireland always seem to interest me since it makes me feel like I want to know more of it. It is also good that the authorities always seem to keep these ruins intact for tourism purposes as well. The ruins in questions here are the ruins of the Cong Abbey. Any self respecting Irish town should have its own abbey. Over the years it has fell into disuse and only the ruins remain.

The church of Saint Mary’s here in Cong now sits in its place taking up a small corner of the ruins. It was difficult to tell what the ruins used to be if you didn’t know it was an abbey. There is small cemetery in the ground. It might have been good to have a quick look here but the rain was quite bad and we didn’t want to linger too long since we intend to go back home. I was thinking to myself that I need to come back to this place for another visit. The weather isn’t good for visits and it has already ruined my mood.
