Exploring Dunguaire Castle

The sight of a castle always excites me. To me a castle is some place which seems to exist only in fairy tales and yet Ireland seems to have a lot of them. Most of the castle here are not world famous but a lot of them are definitely worth visiting. These are not royal palaces which are probably the inspiration for fairy tale castles but these ones are more like fortresses which have been built primarily for defense. The Dunguaire Castle seem to fit the bill. It looks out to sea for invaders. It is also on a small hill which gives it a little elevation to see surrounding area which is probably three fourths water.

Strangely enough, there was no clear path to explore the castle. The doors were closed but there was a dirt path along the foot of the castle to follow. Parts of the path can be a little iffy so it pays to watch your step here. The path winds around the castle so you get a 360 degree view of the surroundings. It is pretty much just the water here while you see some village further south. The area is still quite flat in these parts, so nothing much to see here. Too bad the castle itself is closed, I hope it is only temporary.
